StareReap is an art project initiated by Ricoh Co., LTD., which uses printing technology in collaboration with contemporary artists to create a series of innovative works. The works in this exhibition are no longer the traditional paper and canvas, but are printed and produced on a variety of materials such as metal, glass, acrylic and wood. It can present subtle images and spatial textures that cannot be compared with traditional printing processes. From flat to three-dimensional, the works are expressed through various forms and media such as digital works, photos, collages, etc., with complex bumps and textures to expand the artist's creative inspiration.

Exhibiting artist

Daisuke Yokota/Daisuke Yokota

Born in Saitama, Japan in 1983, he is one of Japan's leading photographers, whose work has been exhibited worldwide and has also published at Tate Modern. Yokota's unique method of making the film is to create chemical changes such as pouring hot water on the surface of the film, and to integrate the complex expression of the film into the work. StareReap is based on photographic works and strives to three-dimensional the fine textures such as wrinkles and ridges seen in the works.

Katsuhiko Hibino, who made his name with corrugated paper in the 1980s, is now known as the president of the Tokyo University of the Arts, the only national art university in Japan, and the director of the Gifu Art Museum. Japanese 80's culture is popular around the world as "urban pop" and "80's" culture, and Hibino is considered its symbolic presence. An important piece made by Hibino in the 1980s with the theme of "dog", the charm of the original work is shown without loss with the latest technology of StareReap.

His works are known for their vivid images and colorful output styles on the computer. For this collaboration with StareReap, Kobayashi chose black and white. Oyama Enrikoisisam/Enrico Isamu Oyama

Born in 1983 in Tokyo, Japan, Enrico Oyama Isamu is highly regarded as an artist who confronts the street art of modern art. The main feature of his published works is the extraction of action images of graffiti known as "fast rotating structures." In collaboration with StareReap, the image was decomposed and reconstructed from a microscopic perspective, resulting in the "SPECULA" series of repetitive images.

While making full use of and paying tribute to the dual image, the artist quotes Saul Luwitt, Win Kawahara, and Christopher Wohl, and makes the production on the theme of the process of the creation of the work itself. The works in this exhibition are based on a photograph of a scarf taken by Saul Luwitt and electronically simulate its texture, asking the viewer about the meaning of the substance that exists on the flat surface.

about the StareReap project

StareReap is an art project initiated by Ricoh to create new works of art using three-dimensional printing technology through collaboration with modern artists. So far, StareReap, centered around the RICOH ART GALLERY in Ginza, Tokyo, has successfully organized exhibitions with artists from Japan and around the world.

StareReap 2.5 (2.5D) refers to the use of UV stereoscopic inkjet printing technology of approximately 23 microns. The technology can stack multiple layers of very fine UV ink droplets to fully display complex bumps and textures that are not possible with traditional printmaking and printing techniques (screen and lithography). The technology can also be printed on a variety of materials, such as metal, glass, and wood, and can print subtle expressions and spatial textures that cannot be accomplished by hand, thereby expanding the tension of the artist's expression.

StareReap fully respects the free imagination of artists and is constantly committed to creating works that transcend technology through trial and error with artists. The aim of the project was to find new ways of expression as the print director and artist worked together to hone their ideas.
